About IR35 Update

IR35 Update is an independent website focused on IR35, the off-payroll working rules, employment status and related tax and compliance issues.

The site is aimed at contractors, clients and small businesses that need clear, practical information in one place.

What we cover

We publish news, guides and explainers on topics such as:

  • IR35 and off-payroll rules in the public and private sectors
  • Employment status tests, including control, substitution and mutuality of obligation
  • Status determination statements and client responsibilities
  • HMRC compliance activity, CEST and status disputes
  • Relevant tax and company rule changes that affect contractors and their clients

Our aim is to help readers understand how the rules work in practice so they can have better informed conversations with their advisers, agencies and end clients.

Independent publisher

IR35 Update is independently owned and run by Contract Eye Limited (Company Reg. No. 06974664)

Our director, James Leckie, has been publishing contractor and business content for over 25 years and was among the first to report on IR35 following the original Inland Revenue press release (No.35) in 1999.

He founded Contractor UK in 1999 and left in 2003 to focus on building ByteStart and IT Contracting, which he still runs today.

His work focuses on IR35, tax and regulatory changes affecting contractors, drawing on long-standing relationships with accountants, advisers and industry specialists.

Historically, this domain carries deep roots in the contracting sector. In the early 2000s, the Professional Contractors Group (PCG) used the web address to host updates on its landmark 2001 High Court Judicial Review of the legislation. While IR35 Update has no past or present affiliation with the PCG (now IPSE), we are proud to have returned this historic domain to active duty as a modern, independent IR35 site.

We are not part of an accounting firm, umbrella company, recruitment agency, law firm or lobby group.

IR35 Update makes all editorial decisions, and we do not sell rankings or coverage inside articles.

Where we link to external sites or refer to a product or service, we do so on merit. Any future sponsorships or commercial partnerships will be clearly labelled.

Using our content

The information on this site is for general guidance only. IR35 and employment status can be complex and fact-specific, so nothing on IR35 Update should be treated as personal tax, legal or financial advice.

Readers should always take professional advice on their own circumstances before making decisions about contracts, working arrangements or tax.
